How to Eat Your Watermelon without It Being a Food Poison
The world is getting ready to celebrate watermelon season, but a recent study by a New York City-based nutrition lab has proven it’s also the season for serious food poisoning.
The study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, found that people with elevated blood sugar levels who ate watermelon juice were more likely to develop serious kidney stones than people who didn’t consume the fruit.
The researchers found that watermelon drinking has a direct correlation with increased risk of kidney stones, according to the Associated Press.
The most common kidney stones among people with fructose intolerance are kidney stones in the left kidney, the researchers found.
Honey, a fruit that has high fructose content, has been linked to kidney stones and other health problems, including cancer.
In addition, people with kidney disease, like diabetes, are at higher risk of developing kidney stones.
The report was conducted by the Food and Nutrition Board of the American Heart Association, a national nonprofit organization that advises on the health of Americans.
The researchers noted that drinking watermelon is not considered a safe food, even though it contains large amounts of sugar.
“There’s no safe amount of sugar in watermelon, and the amount of fructose is in the right amount to cause these effects,” said Dr. Joseph DeMaria, the study’s lead author.
The watermelon researchers looked at data collected from nearly 40,000 participants ages 21 to 68, and found that nearly three out of four participants had high blood sugar, which can increase risk for kidney stones by up to 30 percent.
The sugar in the watermelon can cause kidney stones if the fruit is eaten too frequently.
About 10 percent of people in the study reported drinking watermelons weekly, the AP reported.
“These are a very healthy fruit,” Dr. DeMaria said.
“But it’s a very sweet fruit and it’s got a very high fructose level.”
People who drank a lot of watermelon were also more likely than others to have kidney stones or other health issues.
Those who drank about three to five times a week had about 10 percent higher risk.
People who ate less than two times a day had no risk.
The fruit is a source of fiber, which is important to healthy digestion.
About 15 percent of Americans have a low-density lipoprotein (LDL), which is the fat that makes up the bulk of the triglycerides in the body.
That’s also linked to a lower risk of heart disease.
People who drink a lot are also more at risk for certain cancers, including colon and breast cancers.
Those with diabetes, obesity and hypertension are also at higher risks.
Dr. DeMara said the study could help inform people who drink watermelon.
He said that although the fruit has a high sugar content, it’s not the only thing that can cause serious kidney damage.
“I think it’s important to know what your consumption is, because there are a lot more fruits and vegetables that are not watermelon,” he said.
Drinking a lot also increases your risk for type 2 diabetes, hypertension and some cancers.
The AP reported that the average American consumes nearly 60 grams of sugar per day.
